England along with Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
