Beijing Slams US of ‘Hypocritical Policies’ Regarding Trade Levy Warning
Donald Trump’s latest threat to enforce an additional complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, per the Chinese government.
A representative of the ministry additionally remarked that China could introduce its own undisclosed “responsive actions” if the American leader executes his warning, noting that the country was “unafraid” of a possible trade conflict.
On Friday, Donald Trump responded at Beijing’s move to strengthen its policies for foreign shipments of rare earths, alleging Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “captive”.
Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi, which was set for a meeting in Seoul before the month ends.
The former president’s remarks on Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 falling by over two and a half percent, marking its steepest fall since last spring.
The president’s words revived apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.
This past spring, the respective governments had reached an agreement to remove high import duties on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of bilateral trade stopping between the two countries.
This left, US tariffs on products from China incurring an extra thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market face a import levy.
The most recent comments from China – released by the Commerce Ministry in the format of written responses to journalist’s questions – mirrored rhetoric from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.
Officials denounced US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “standard procedures” to safeguard domestic safety and that of the global community.
Their representative stated that for “many years”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of national security, exploited export control measures and “enforced” discriminatory practices against the Chinese nation.
“Using” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to interact with the Chinese government,” the official commented.
“The nation’s view” on a tariff war has consistently been steady: we do not want one, but we are not afraid of one.”
Recently, China revealed it was tightening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earth minerals and additional substances critical for advanced tech manufacturing.
The action was viewed as a key move, as the country refines about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in products such as solar panels and smartphones.
Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being seen by some as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances in preparation for upcoming negotiations.
It is unclear whether a talks between Trump and China’s leader, planned at a summit in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will still proceed.
